27.2 Marking an Error Message Obsolete

Beginning with MySQL 8.0, it is possible to mark an error message obsolete. This should be done only for messages that no longer used in the server code. The following procedure shows how to do this, using the ER_HASHCHK error as an example.

  1. Find the error entry in errmsg-utf8.txt:

  2. Change the error symbol to begin with an OBSOLETE_ prefix:

Symbols prefixed by OBSOLETE_ are ignored by comp_error and are not written to the errmsg.sys file. In effect, they are removed from the binary error message file.

  3. Notify the documentation team about the obsolete error so that it can be mentioned in the release notes.
